Toon Shaded Donald Duck in 3D

My goal with this project was to create a piece that resembled hand-drawn originals but using 3D.
With that in mind, I decided to 3D model Walt Disney's Donald Duck.

I created the base mesh in Maya and posed in ZBrush. Using Substance Painter, I created simple albedo maps that I would also later use as edge detection maps with the Arnold Toon shader.

The project took roughly 3 to 4 days from beginning to end.

An ambient occlusion node was added to highlight the ability to quickly bring a traditional 2D toon look and bring it closer to appear 3D.

The node network for Donald was pretty simple as shown above. Go to shaundunnart.com to see more about the background node network plus more!
